1964 JDM Seiko 41897 Automatic “Sportsmatic 5” (Kanji only)
1964 JDM Seiko 41897 Automatic “Sportsmatic 5” (Kanji only)
The Seiko 5 series was introduced in 1963, and began a legacy that still thrives today. The Sportsmatic was the first to carry the 5 logo, and represented an affordable to approach to quality timepieces. Built to meet 5 specifications, it was designed for the “every man (or woman)” looking for a watch that not only looked great, but could be as dependable as it was comfortable. The requirements are an automatic movement, water resistant case, single window day/date display, recessed crown at the four o’clock position, and a rugged, dependable build. This example from July of ‘64 hits them all, and after five and a half decades, it’s still living up to expectations. The dial is a silvery white sunburst with a glossy lacquer finish that’s virtually flawless. The markers are applied baguettes with a split center and polished finish. The hands are broad dauphines that are easy to read and well proportioned. The case is a classic affair with contoured lugs and a thinner profile. The bezel and case back are stainless steel, but the mid case is steel plated. The upper surface has aged extremely well, but some plating loss and light wear is visible on the lower side. As it was built prior to 1965, it has the five digit “41897” reference number, rather than the hyphenated eight digit style that was yet to be adopted. For the same reason, the movement was also numbered differently. This piece houses the Cal. 410 that would eventually be renamed the 6619. Post service it’s keeping near perfect time, and is unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal. A scarce JDM variant, it features a Kanji only day. The date can be semi-quickset, but the day must be set by advancing or retreating the time in 24 hour intervals. We’ve paired it with an oiled Sienna suede to highlight the dial, and offer a relaxed, comfortable finish. Seiko’s mid-century offerings are timeless layouts that bring casual sophistication to any roster.
