1970 JDM Seiko 6139-6031 “5 Sports” Speed Timer (Proof)
Seiko’s 6139-60XX chronographs are truly iconic. From the barrel shape of the case, to the bold color layouts, they are instantly recognizable and often the catalyst for newly converted enthusiasts. Like many of Seiko’s early chronographs, two versions were created side by side; a larger production, lower jewel count export variant, and a smaller production, higher jewel count model built solely for the Japanese domestic market. Aside from additional jeweling, the JDM 6139’s (among other references) were dubbed “Speed Timers” and the dials often carried the “5 Sports” badge as well. Appropriately, the day of the week toggles between English and Japanese (Kanji), and the these models were available in color ways and with signature bracelets not seen on the export versions. For collectors, these JDM references are list toppers, but as they were difficult to acquire outside of Japan, sourcing can be challenging. Perhaps that’s why we’re a bit more than excited to be able to offer up this absolute stunner from October of 1970. Not just a scarce reference in general, but an early “Proof” model in jaw dropping condition. The case is unpolished with the original finishes still intact, and its topped with a black and red “Coke” bezel that shows almost no visible wear, and no color fade . Beneath it, the matte black and silver dial is virtually perfect. The only hints at its age is some very slight oxidation around the upper edge of the sub register. The luminous markers are original, and are a crisp bright white. The hour and minute hands are free of chipping or paint loss, and the chronograph sweep is the correct “two piece” design. The inner bezel is flawless, and rotates smoothly in either direction via the crown. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service it’s keeping near perfect time. The chronograph functions are crisp and responsive, and with a snappy reset to zero. We’ve paired it with a steel gray rally “Tropic” style strap for a period finish that’s versatile and comfortable on the wrist. The Pogue’s “bad boy” brother, it’s a grail for many, but a reality for very few.
