For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. For collectors, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From September of 1973, this stunner is exactly what we mean. The dial is a crisp navy blue with a velvety textured finish. The luminous material on the markers is the original, and remains a stark bright white. The rotating inner bezel bears only the faintest fading from black to gray, and the silver markings are still crisp and clearly legible. The hour and minute batons have retained their bright polished finish, and the original luminous within, a perfect match to the hour plots. The chronograph hands are a fiery orange that is both complementary, and in perfect contrast to the dial. The outer bezel in crisp, metallic red and blue shows almost no visible wear, and no color fade. The case is unpolished with sharp corners, and the original finishes are still clearly visible. The chronograph functions are snappy and responsive, and post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with an Anthracite grain leather with white stitching that’s a near perfect ringer for the dial, and provides a comfortable fit and finish on the wrist. Completely original aside from a replacement crystal, it’s an absolute head turner that’s sure to be the new front runner on any roster.
