1977 JDM Seiko 6306-7010 Automatic “Actus SS” 21j Day/Date
1977 JDM Seiko 6306-7010 Automatic “Actus SS” 21j Day/Date
Throughout the Seiko brand, there are more than a few subsets worth adding to any collection. In this case, the “Actus” line is a noteworthy example. Built and designed for the Japanese domestic market (JDM) only, the designs in this category range from the very traditional, right through to the avant garde. The word itself comes from a Latin term meaning to progress or move forward. A fitting definition, as Seiko typically housed newer variants of developing movements as progress was achieved in their designs. Often, the “Actus” branding would be accompanied by “SS” badging as well to denote a “Second Setting,” or hacking mechanism that would stop the sweep seconds while setting the time to allow for a more precise time set. This example from March of 1977 is the embodiment of this ideal with its ultra traditional layout giving little away of what’s under the hood. The dial is a stark, textured matte white with the hours are marked in printed Arabic numerals. The “Actus” logo sits just beneath the applied Seiko badging, and the “SS” badge and printed jewel count are above the six. A framed day (English/Kanji) and date window sits at three, and both can be independently quickset via the crown. The hour and minute hands are thin, polished batons with subtle black striping, and a long, slender sweep counts the seconds. The case sports classic Seiko architecture with a thin conical bezel, and hefty tapered lugs with a brushed top. Behind the screw down case back is Seiko’s venerable 6306; a JDM only calibre that is shared with the legendary domestic “Turtle” 150m Pro Diver. With 21 jewels, and hack function, it has clear advantages over it’s 6309 export counterpart, and is a robust and reliable movement that if well cared for, can be a reliable time keeper indefinitely. Post service, this one is keeping time to within a few seconds per day, and with ample reserve. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and it appears the case may have had the finishes lightly touched up at some point. We’ve paired it with a smooth black leather with white stitching for a crisp clean finish, but the original Seiko “Actus” three-link stainless steel bracelet will also be included. Clean lines and a cleaner layout with JDM horsepower, this one is sure to move things forward in your own rotation.
