Seiko’s H558-5000, or “Arnie” as it’s more commonly referred to, was the first ever diver to have an analog and digital display with a chronograph and an alarm. It is a beast of a watch at nearly 46mm including the shroud, and so it seems fitting that it would eventually become synonymous with it’s biggest fan, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnie, with a fairly well documented collection of great watches already, rode out most of the 80’s with his favorite Seiko strapped to his wrist. It even saw significant screen time in the movies “Predator” and “Commando.” Considered by collectors to be a fringe member of the “Tuna” family of Seiko divers, an honest, fully working example can be a bit hard to come by these days as they were often worn hard by those for whom it was designed. The shroud is a rubberized plastic that can become brittle with age, and moisture intrusion or a dead battery left sitting can destroy the movement. But, for those willing to be patient, a good example is certainly worth waiting for. This one-owner example from March of ’83 is unbelievable. The original shroud is perfect, and is held in place by the original screws and collars. The bezel rotates with a firm click in either direction, and the insert is near perfect. The matte black dial and depth meter are flawless. The original luminous plots have no visible patina, and the hands are perfect. The digital display is crisp, and all functions are working correctly including the incandescent bulb and alarm/hourly chime. The case is unpolished and shows only minimal wear as it’s been protected by the shroud. The crown and case back both screw down securely. It arrived to me on the original GL-831, which will ship with the watch, but as there are breaks between multiple buckle slots, we attached it to an Uncle Seiko oxidized GL-831 for a finish as close to the original as possible. Other than a replacement crystal, it is completely original, and after service and a new battery, it is keeping perfect time and all functions are operating as they should. As setting this watch is somewhat involved, we’ve added a link to the instructions below. Clearly one of the best examples we’ve ever seen, this one is sure to be a highlight in any collection.
