Not to be outdone by the skillful designers at Suwa, Seiko’s Daini division unleashed a treasure trove of well thought out, and cleverly executed light sport divers in the late 60’s and into the 70’s. Chunky cases and highlights of color make them easily identifiable, and no less desirable. From March of 1970, this 7019 is a perfect example of the eye catching layouts, and hearty architecture that’s become synonymous with the Daini brand. The case is a thick cushion with partially hooded lugs, cleanly beveled edges, and a wide bezel that’s both modern and rugged. Beneath the beveled mineral crystal is a silver sunburst dial bearing a wide horizontal black stripe through the center. Applied split bar markers house large luminous plots that have developed a slight patina, and beveled batons count the hours and minutes. The slender sweep is bright orange, and stands out against a mostly monochrome backdrop. The day and date can be set indecently via the original crown, and the day can be toggled between English and Kanji (Japanese). Framing the dial is a rotating “count up” style inner bezel in black and silver with a prominent crest marker at zero. The crystal has been replaced, and the hour and minute hands have been re-lumed for increased legibility. The 7019 is a 21 jewel workhorse that’s keeping excellent time post service. To bring out the dial stripe, we’ve paired it with a black distressed leather that’s both comfortable and provides versatile style.
