1970 Seiko 6119-7173 “5” Sports 70m Diver “Rally” (Proof)
Seiko produced no shortage of sport divers in the late 60's and 70's, but none so memorable and as sought after as those that carry the "Rally" distinction. So named for their checkered bezels and dials, they are an instantly recognizable combination of color and cool. This example from January of 1970 is no exception. The case is a 42mm barrel that’s unpolished with the original finishes still visible. The knurled bezel rotates smoothly in either direction, and the insert shows only light wear and no fading. Beneath it, the sunburst dial is a lacquered azure blue in near perfect condition. It’s set with polished applied markers, each with a single silver stripe through the center. The hour and minute hands are polished batons, and in contrast to the dial, the sweep is a bright blaze orange. Framing the dial is a steeply angled chapter ring consisting of silver minute blocks against larger black hour blocks with luminous plots. We’ve paired this one with a slate gray RAF NATO that provides comfort on the wrist, and showcases the amazing dial and bezel. The 6119 driving the hands is keeping near perfect time post service, and is ready for many more years of dependable time keeping. As Seiko sport divers go, the “Rally” is the king of cool, and a must have in any collection.
