A welcome departure from Seiko’s typically sport driven stylings in the 6139 lineup, the 8002 is a perfect representation of what every modern manufacturer is trying to accomplish with a throwback design. This stunner, however, is the real deal. In addition, it’s the scarcer “Speed Timer” variant that was only available to the Japanese domestic market. From May of 1971, it’s a tasty tonneau style with rich colors, great lines, and an historic movement. The minty dial is a matte black bordered with a deep orange 1/5 second track that nicely ties it to the chronograph hands. The sub register makes adds great contrast, with a bright turquoise five minute countdown, and fifteen minute divider. Atop the unpolished case is an inset and well proportioned bezel that’s finished with a glossy black inlay. The Speed Timer logo adds balance opposite the framed day/date (Kanji/English) window. An early variant, it’s equipped with Seiko’s first iteration of their premier automatic chronograph movement, the 6139A. A beast of a calibre, it features a column wheel design with a vertical clutch. The chronograph functions are snappy and responsive, and it’s keeping time to within just a few seconds per day. We’ve paired it with a heavy two-piece RAF NATO in olive drab that’s both comfortable and showcases the dial and hands. It’s sure to be a fast favorite in any collection.
