1972 JDM Seiko 6139-7012 5 Sports Speed Timer Automatic Chronograph
1972 JDM Seiko 6139-7012 5 Sports Speed Timer Automatic Chronograph
A versatile vintage racing chronograph, the 7012 is perfect for those looking to find one watch for all occasions. The case offers a slimmer profile than most others in the 6139 line up, and its soft tonneau shape is comfortable and well proportioned. At 41mm, its not overpowering, but has plenty of presence on the wrist. The bezel is polished and beveled for a clean finish, and beneath it is a matte black dial with a nice balance of text and color. This example from September of ‘72 has aged nicely. The Speed Timer logo sits opposite the day (Kanji/English) and date window in fiery orange and is complemented by the 1/5 second track at the dial’s edge. The sub register offers great contrast in a charcoal gray pattern of tight concentric circles that create a subtle sunburst effect. The original luminous material on the markers and hands has developed an even khaki patina, and the bright white hour and minute hands are easily legible. The chronograph hands standout in bright orange and lend well to the racing aesthetic. Breaking up the dark backdrop, the minute track is segmented in white blocks, and the fixed chapter has a clean white tachymetric scale. The 6139B is keeping near perfect time post service, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. We’ve paired it with a desert tan RAF NATO that works nicely with the black dial and is comfortable for daily wear. A JDM Seiko classic, this Speed Timer transitions from the track to the office with ease and is sure to be a ‘go to’ in any collection.
