Though much of the attention of vintage fans seems to center around the 613X “Suwa” chronographs , Seiko’s Daini division was answering back with their own 701X calibers that were equally impressive, and in some instances, even ahead of the curve. What they lack in minute and hour registers, they more than make up for with features all their own. This 7015-7010 from May of ‘73 is easily one of the best looking chronographs to come out of the entire era. The conical case flares at the bottom and slopes sharply upward through the bezel. The lugs are nicely proportioned, leaving just enough room for a seamless fit the original triple-hinged “5 Sports” bracelet. The bezel insert is a soft, matte black trimmed in a silver and yellow tachymetric scale that shows very little in the way of wear. Beneath it is a bi-level dial that’s absolutely perfect. The lower portion is a charcoal sunburst with applied markers, framed by a metallic silver upper ring trimmed in black and electric blue. Beyond that, the glossy black rotating inner bezel makes up the second half of the slide rule function mapped out on the dial. The hour and minute hands are brightly polished batons, off set by a bold orange sweep hand. The 7015 is keeping near perfect time post service, and features a “flyback” function that allows the sweep hand to be reset without having to first stop the chronograph mechanism. It is in stunning original condition aside from a replacement crystal, and rarely available at all. Don’t miss out on one of Daini’s finest!
