Seiko’s Crown line, along with the Marvels, evolved into the Kings and Grands that put the brand on the map as a top tier manufacturer. In the early 1960’s the Crown was just that; a representation of Seiko’s technical prowess packed neatly into a crisp mid-century package. As bargains go, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better one on the vintage market. I couldn’t resist this stunning example from July of 1962. Though we typically don’t offer many gold filled pieces, the dial on this one was captivating. Originally a matte silver under a lacquer finish, it has developed a golden “honey” patina with a subtle leopard pattern throughout. It’s the kind of patina that can be forced. It only comes with nearly 60 years of being exposed to just the right amount of UV and atmospheric conditions. The markers are applied baguettes that have retained their high polish finish, and the hour and minute hands are broad, polished dauphines with a perfect sloping taper. The slender sweep reaches all the way to the minute track, and clips along at 18,000 bph. Two lines of script and a four point star indicating the dial received an extra treatment make for an extremely balanced and clean presentation. The case is a classic layout with a slim profile of just under 10mm. The lugs are long and tapered, and the crown is  just the right size to allow for easy winding and setting without being cumbersome on the wrist. The hand wound cal. 560 is a 21 jewel, finely finished movement that, post service, is keeping time to within a few seconds per day.
