1971 JDM Seiko 6138-0011 5 Sports Speed Timer UFO / "Yachtman" (Proof)
The term "Yachtman" appears to have been of questionable origin as it pertains to this particular chronograph, and clearly because it looks right at home trackside, far from any body of water suitable for yachting. Without a doubt, the 6138-0011 Speed Timer is 1970's racing for the wrist. This example from March of ‘71 has allowed us our first opportunity to offer the impossible to find “Proof” dialed variant, and the dial itself is perfect. In flat black, it’s off set by opposing sub registers in matte silver that have developed the hint of a golden patina. The larger of the two counting minutes, and it's smaller partner above tracking hours. The hour and minute hands are flat black batons tipped in white , and gliding around the dial, a long and slender faded yellow sweep. The luminous material is the original and sports an almost khaki patina that’s even throughout. The case is a beastly 44.5mm of sloping contours and smooth case lines. It’s unpolished, and the original finishes are clearly visible. The bezel is finished in black with a fiery metallic red inner track scaling the tachymeter. The 6138 movement offers independent quick set of both the day and date, and can be both manually and automatically wound. The chronograph functions are crisp and responsive and post service, its keeping near perfect time. It comes attached to the original 5 Sports “H-Link” bracelet that still has most of the factory blade sticker intact. Completely original aside from a replacement crystal, this is truly a rare opportunity to own one of the earliest examples of this Seiko classic.
