1971 JDM Seiko 7017–6040 5 Sports Speed Timer “Flyback”
1971 JDM Seiko 7017–6040 5 Sports Speed Timer “Flyback”
Though Seiko’s Suwa division famously released the 6139 automatic chronograph in 1969, it was only one year later that the Daini division answered back with their own iteration in the form of the 7017. Thinner and sleeker than the 6139, it could be delivered in a more compact package, and featured a “flyback” function that allowed for the chronograph sweep to be reset without having to first stop the mechanism. This example from April of ‘71 called out to us as the color scheme was close to our hearts. The minty dial is a bold matte navy countered by an orange minute track and “Speed Timer” designation. It’s framed by a “count up” rotating inner bezel with silver and steel gray blocking. The hour and minute hands are polished beveled batons that pair with the applied markers, and the chronograph sweep in blaze orange can’t be missed. As it’s a JDM variant, the day can be toggled between English and Kanji, and is paired along side the date under a polished frame. It comes attached to the original “5 Sports” bracelet that’s a double hinged block design. The tonneau case is nicely contoured, and the flared sides make for comfortable daily wear. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a NOS Seiko replacement mineral crystal. Post service, the 7017 is keeping near perfect time, and the “fly back” chronograph functions operate smoothly. Vintage racing for the wrist, this one is sure to be a bright spot in any rotation.
