For those in the market for a clean vintage classic with timeless appeal, Seiko’s Daini division delivers. If you’ve followed us for any length of time, you’re likely aware of our Arabic dial obsession, and this 7009-8279-P from December of ‘78 is a perfect example of why. The dial is incredible. Its matte, bright white finish offers subtle texturing, and is the perfect backdrop for the pressed relief  Arabic numerals in black. The hour and minute hands are thin batons with a bright polished finish, and black striping through the center, and the counting the seconds is a long and slender solid black sweep. The day and date share a framed window at three o’clock, and a subtle minute track with luminous hours provides a balanced border. The case is textbook Seiko, wherein the mid-case seems to float between adjoined, finely tapered lugs. This design is one of our favorites, as it works just as well with the bracelet as it does with a strap, but in very opposite ways. On the bracelet, the lugs taper to meet the end links for a seamless transition that gives the case more body, and a squared angular appearance. Switching it out for a strap, the contours of the lugs become sharply defined, and the case takes on a different appearance all together. For that reason we’ve decided to ship it with the original flat link “jubilee,” as well as a soft gray suede to capitalize on its design versatility. The 7009 driving the hands is a tried and true workhorse that is keeping near perfect time post service, and is ready for many more years of reliable timekeeping. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal. If a clean and affordable casual remains on your list, we’re betting this one will more than scratch your itch.
