1972 Seiko 6117-6400 Automatic “World Time” (GMT)
1972 Seiko 6117-6400 Automatic “World Time” (GMT)
Seiko’s third iteration of a “World Time” design came in the form of the 6400/09. It was available in a few distinct color ways, but for us, the black and orange variant is certainly the list topper. The dial is a rich charcoal black with a cross-hatched linen texture, and a crisp lacquer finish. At its edge is a pumpkin orange 24 hour track that can be used in conjunction with the black and orange “cities of the world” inner bezel to determine the time anywhere in the world at a glance. The hands and applied markers are brightly polished aside from the bold red of the contoured GMT hand that serves to assist in two of this watch’s three functions: Tracking local time, that of a destination time zone, and determining the local time anywhere else in the world. The case offers great vintage appeal with a classic tonneau shape and large, 41mm diameter. The crown sits recessed at four, and can be turned in either direction to rotate the “cities” bezel. The date can be quickset via the crown in the second position. This example from September of ‘72 checks all the boxes. It is unpolished and completely original including a NOS Seiko acrylic crystal. It comes attached to the original double hinged “bar” link bracelet, and post service is keeping near perfect time. An absolute stunner, this one is sure to be a fast favorite on any roster.
