1972 Seiko 6139-6002 Automatic Chronograph “True Pogue” (Resist)
1972 Seiko 6139-6002 Automatic Chronograph “True Pogue” (Resist)
For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From February of ‘72, this one is its own highlight reel and easily ranks among the best examples we’ve had the opportunity to offer. The “Resist” (R) dial is an immaculate golden sunburst with a flawless lacquer finish. The hour and minute hands are free of oxidation and corrosion and have retained their original polished finish. The original luminous material on both the markers and hands is a crisp and clean bright white. The chronograph hands are bright red with no chipping or paint loss, and the inner bezel is a rich, vivid yellow with no fading from UV exposure. The case is unpolished with crisp lines and sharp corners, and the original finishes are still clearly visible. The outer tachymetric bezel in metallic red and blue shows virtually no wear or color fade. We’ve paired it with an Uncle Seiko non-tapered “H” link bracelet, and in an effort to keep its appearance as original as possible, I removed the Uncle Seiko clasp and blades and installed a period correct genuine Seiko clasp and blades set. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. It’s completely original aside from the bracelet and a replacement crystal, and a rare opportunity to own an incredible example of a watch that has deservedly reached “grail” status among collectors.
