1985 Seiko 6309-7049 Automatic 150m Pro Diver “Turtle”
1985 Seiko 6309-7049 Automatic 150m Pro Diver “Turtle”
As important as any watch can be to the efficacy of a brand, the 6309-7040/9 is a perfect delivery of intention. It's as rugged and hard wearing as it is aesthetically satisfying. Even as the first "Turtles" released in 1976 turn 45 this year, one thing is certain... they don't ever get old. This example from January of ‘85 is no exception. Unpolished, and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, it's an opportunity to add an icon to your roster. The matte black dial is virtually flawless with the original luminous plots intact. The luminous is clean throughout with only a few scattered pinpoints of darkening. The hands were heavily oxidized which caused some plating loss, and after careful cleaning they exhibit a slight brassy tone. They are the originals with clean original luminous intact. The bezel rotates with a firm click in either direction, and the insert, showing only light wear, is developing a bluish tint. The crown and case back screw down tightly, and the 6309A they protect is a workhorse movement ready to provide many more years of reliable time keeping. Post service, it has a strong reserve and is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with an Uncle Seiko oxidized GL-831 flat vent for fit and finish as close to the original as possible. A true Seiko icon, and still their top selling diver to date, it’s a must have for any collector
