“Seikomatic” has become synonymous with clean mid-century design and timeless architecture.  This “time only” example from July of 1961 is a sophisticated casual that proves a minimalist approach doesn’t mean foregoing nuance. The dial is a silvery white sunburst beneath a slick lacquer finish, and is set with polished and fluted baguette markers. The eight pointed star above the six, marks this as a “SD,” or Special Dial reference. In this case, the indices are solid 14kt yellow gold. Just two lines of crisp printed text, and the “spinning top” emblem noting automatic winding, create a perfectly balanced layout. The hour and minute hands are polished dauphines with a sloping taper that are easily legible at a glance, and a thin, lengthy sweep counts the seconds. A round, low profile case, with long beveled lugs make for a classic and versatile finish. The case back engraving is sharp and clear, and specifies a 20 micron thick gold plating that shows almost no visible wear after more than 60 years. Driving the hands is the Seiko 603, a solid and reliable self-winder that would later be renamed the 6201, and serve as the foundation for the many 62XX variations to come. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with a smooth black leather with white stitching that lands this one on the dressier side of casual adding easy elegance to any roster.
