Seiko's "Weekdater" line up from the 1960's offer some of the cleanest layouts and most appealing designs to come out of era. Mid-century modernity and minimalism that's just as enticing today as it was when they were introduced nearly 60 years ago. At the time of its release in 1964, the 6218 was a flagship of the Seikomatic lineup. Considered the automatic equivalent of the then only manually wound GS line, it was built on the 62 base movement that would eventually be the platform for the first self-winding Grand Seikos to hit the market just a few years later. A beautifully detailed movement with a “tadpole” fine adjustor for precision regulation and a jewel count of 35, the 6218 is one of Seiko’s finest, and housed in a package with undeniable presence. This example from April of 1966 is incredible. The dial is a flawless silver sunburst beneath a brilliant lacquer finish. It’s set with polished applied markers with subtle detailing, and surrounded by a raised minute chapter. The framed date window is at three, and a framed “full day” window sits above the six. The hour and minute hands are broad and beveled dauphines that taper to a fine point and sport a mirror finish. With no bezel, the case has a comfortably thin profile with sculpted angular lugs. The etched case back markings often completely worn on this model are still clearly visible with the crown and dolphin at center. This one appears to have been a presentation watch as a ring of Chinese characters and the number “70” have been cleanly engraved along the outer edge. The hacking 6218 is keeping near perfect time post service, and offers quicksetting for the date, and a semi-quickset day. The heavily gold plated case has faired incredibly well considering its years, and with almost no visible wear-through. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and we’ve paired it with a smooth black leather for a bold, contrasting finish. Blending the best of engineering and style, it’s sure to earn a regular spot in any rotation.
