Seiko's "Weekdater" line up from the 1960's offer some of the cleanest layouts and most appealing designs to come out of era. Mid-century modernity and minimalism that's just as relevant today as it was when they were introduced more than 50 years ago. Earlier versions are easily identifiable by their “J” style numbers and three digit movement numbers. This J13080 from February of ‘64 is a flagship of the Weekdater line. The dial sports the applied “Seikomatic” spinning top badging, and just above the six o’clock marker the AD “Star” insignia denotes an appliqué dial. The movement, Seiko’s 400, is a 33 jeweled automatic that would eventually evolve into the down-jeweled 6206 (26j). At 53 years old, this timeless timepiece has aged nicely with only minor blemishes to the silver sunburst dial. The broad dauphine hands boast a mirror finish and are a perfect pairing to the detailed applied markers. The case is classically designed with beveled lugs that sit at a perfect angle to the 37mm case. On a light brown distressed leather strap, this rare classic is a perfect understatement that’s just as relevant today as it was more than a half century ago.
