Seiko’s Sportsmatic line from the mid 1960’s was a great blend of style and reliability. If an affordable automatic that didn’t look affordable was the wearers goal, these Sportsmatic models came in an array of styles that included some of Seiko’s higher end treatments. This J13058 from May of ‘63 is just such an example. Housed in it’s 36.5mm classically designed case is the 2451, 17j workhorse movement. It would later evolve into the 6601 automatics. The dial is a silvery white sunburst carrying the “spinning top” and Sportsmatic logos along with a brightly blue colored “30 Proof” designation. Just above the six o’clock marker is the ED, or Extra Dial “Star” Insignia indicating an appliqué finish. It’s beautifully balanced with no date aperture and nicely detailed applied markers. The broad dauphine hands are a perfect finish, and right in line with the overall minimalist aesthetic. Keeping it casual, we’ve paired it with a premium navy blue NATO for contrast and comfort giving this mid-century marvel a relaxed finish.
