Though much of the attention of vintage fans seems to center around the 613X “Suwa” chronographs , Seiko’s Daini division was answering back with their own 701X calibers that were equally impressive, and in some instances, even ahead of the curve. What they lack in minute and hour registers, they more than make up for with features all their own. This 7017-6010 from January of ‘71 is an early “Proof” dialed variant dripping in vintage racing cool. The case is a flared tonneau style with with tapered lugs and a chunky bezel with black inlay. Beneath it, the dial is a soft matte black with long and lean luminous markers. The “5” badge sits prominently below the Speed Timer designation, as its an early variant, it carries a 70m water proof indication. Framing the dial is the rotating “count up” inner bezel in a gloss finish for contrast. The dial and hands are near mint with no visible degradation to the luminous, only the development of an even creamy patina throughout. The inner bezel rotates smoothly in either direction, and the the polished batons offer ease of legibility. The chronograph features a “flyback” mechanism that allows the bright orange sweep hand to be reset to zero without first having to be stopped. Attached is the original open “H” link bracelet that’s the perfect companion to this killer chrono. Post service, its keeping near perfect time, and all functions are smooth and responsive. Don’t miss an opportunity to add one of Daini’s smoothest designs to your roster.
